Woodlawn Dental Center Notifies Patients of Ransomware Attack

CAMBRIDGE, OH – May 18, 2020 – Woodlawn Dental Center was the victim of a ransomware attack that resulted in our patients' protected health information being encrypted. We restored the health records from backup hard drives and did not pay the ransom. Although there is no indication that any information was accessed, in an abundance of caution, we have taken steps to notify all individuals and to provide resources to assist them.

On March 18, 2020, we suffered a ransomware attack on our computer systems. We identified the attack almost immediately and were able to restore our systems from secure backup hard drives. Although ransomware attacks do not typically access personal information, in an abundance of caution, we are letting individuals know that their health records were encrypted. Those health records include patients' names, addresses, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, medical insurance and related health information.

We take the security of customer information seriously and have taken measures to reduce the likelihood of a future cyber-attack, including increasing our defenses against these rampant attacks.

We mailed letters to individuals potentially impacted by this incident which includes information about the incident and steps individuals can take to monitor and protect their personal information. We have also established a toll-free call center to answer questions about the incident and related concerns. The call center is available Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Eastern Time and can be reached at 1-844-963-2725. In addition, out of an abundance of caution, we are offering identity theft protection services through Kroll to individuals at no cost.

How do I put a fraud alert on my account?

You may consider placing a fraud alert on your credit report. This fraud alert statement informs creditors to possible fraudulent activity within your report and requests that your creditor contact you prior to establishing any accounts in your name. To place a fraud alert on your credit report, contact Equifax, Experian or TransUnion and follow the Fraud Victims instructions. To place a fraud alert on your credit accounts, contact your financial institution or credit provider.
